about

NO ZONE. NO LIMITS....

Ian Naismith - Guitars, bass, piano, triggered instruments
Grant Calvin Weston - Drums, Drums, and more Drums

NO ZONE is a collaboration between phenomenal drummer Grant Calvin Weston and multi-instrumentalist Ian Naismith.

Recorded & mixed in just two days in an improv style live setting, the songs evoke the spirit of 70s/ early 80s fusion and free jazz while trying to give a gift to future listeners. It is 32 bit, high dynamic range - so CRANK IT UP!!!

When Grant Calvin Weston hopped on a drum kit, it quickly built to a pulse-quickening avant-funk jam while reaching for his secret weapon to incite the crowd with potent statements. Weston’s double-time beats and bombastic power-precision flurries on the kit has brought a different kind of revved-up energy. That energy is alive now and will continue to awe and inspire well into the future.

Calvin earned his professional break at age 17 with legendary Ornette Coleman and appears on several of Ornette’s recordings. He also appears on numerous recordings with avant guitarist James Blood Ulmer. He has also provided his drum magic with a diverse range of music: The Lounge Lizards, John Lurie, Marc Ribot, James Carter, Derek Bailey, Vernon Reid of Living Colour… just to name a few. He tours and/or plays local venues and records with numerous musicians both well-known and up-and-coming.

Ian Naismith is a “guitarist’s guitarist” and multi-instrumentalist - experimental, ambient, a rocker, risk taker, and an improvisational monster. He records everything once and lives with the results. And usually the results are a unique voice that conjures up many influences.

Naismith has released 38 full length recordings since 2001 that explores jazz fusion, thick ethnic and global themes, rock, concrete, electro-acoustic and ambient forms, and often mixes them together. His major guitar influences are rooted in the 1970s fusion & “molten” rock and include Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush), Terje Rypdal, Allan Holdsworth, David Torn, Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Steve Hillage, Pat Thrall, Robert Fripp, and John Goodsall (Brand X).
